The recent Winter Antiques Show at the 7th Regiment Armory was reviewed by Ken Johnson of the New York Times on January 21st, 2010
Among many Tatti successes on display throughout the show was the Featured Object, none other than Steve’s recent conservation project –the magnificent carved granite Urn by Paul Manship:
“If you are in the market for a 14,000-pound, six-foot-tall urn carved from a block of pink Tennessee marble and encircled by a neo-Classical frieze of Indians hunting buffalo and engaging in intertribal warfare, hurry over to the 56th annual Winter Antiques Show before someone else snaps it up. Designed by the sculptor Paul Manship in 1914, this stunning object is on view at Gerald Peters, one of 75 art and antiques dealers gathered to dazzling effect under the capacious roof of the drill hall at the Park Avenue Armory.”

Every conservator in the shop had the opportunity to participate in the conservation of this massive sculpture. After a century of life in an outdoor private garden, the intricate detail was beginning to deteriorate. The surface was beginning to sugar and much of the detail was not readable due the extensive soiling and biological growth across the carved surface.
See how it was restored to its original splendor in our Before and After Gallery!
